A moderator does much more than introduce the next speaker. It's the craft of holding the dramaturgy, reading the room and getting every guest to deliver their best.
Preparation is 80% of the job
What looks improvised on stage is almost always thoroughly prepared backstage. A great moderator gets to know the company's goals, understands every speaker's message and builds a red thread that ties the day together.
Listen more than you talk
The biggest difference between an okay and a truly great moderator is active listening. Catching a phrase, asking the follow-up no one else dares ask, and getting the panel to go deeper than their elevator pitch.
Timing, energy and silence
Knowing when to push the tempo, when to leave room for a pause, and when to cut to save the schedule — that's the difference between an event that flows and one that drags.
