Moderator vs konferencier — what's the difference?

The brief, the tone and the craft differ more than the titles suggest. Picking the right role for the right event saves time, money and awkward transitions.
The konferencier holds the evening together
A konferencier (host / MC) is the host of the whole experience — welcoming, presenting, warming up the room, running awards and tying it all together. The tone is warmer and more personal. Think gala, kick-off, awards or company party.
The moderator drives the content
A moderator works closer to the program: leads panels, runs interviews, asks the sharp questions and deepens the substance. Think conference, industry day, leadership offsite or seminar.
In practice the roles blend
On most events I take on, the roles flow into each other. You need someone who can both carry the evening and drive the content — and who knows when to switch hats.
